The agribusiness industry is experiencing rapid growth as new markets open, both locally and internationally. Kenya provides a perfect environment for exotic fruits, characterized by fertile soils, abundant rainfall, and a favorable climate.

While fruit farming is booming in Kenya, there are three exotic fruits that have particularly promising potential and the capability to make you millions within a short time. Check them out!

Dragon Fruit: A Profitable Crop with High Demand

Imagine selling a kilo of fruits for over Ksh 800. How many can make that? Well, dragon fruit is a relatively new fruit in Kenya, but its profit potential is awe-inspiring. With proper cultivation, an acre can yield up to 30,000 kilos per year. At the farm gate, dragon fruits command a high price in the market, currently selling at Sh 800 per kilo. This equates to a cool Sh24 million from just one acre. How many crops can you make per year from the same land size?

Currently, nearly 90% of the fruits in the Kenyan market are imported, which shows there’s a loophole that farmers can exploit. From statistics, if we manage to produce the fruit in volumes, we can still sell it at Sh 400 per kilo. With the high price, a farmer will still make a clean Sh 12 million per acre each year. Isn’t it still a huge fortune?

Durian

Durian is another fruit with high-profit potential. It's said that no two durians taste the same, and each has a unique taste. Well, maybe this is the reason why they retail at high prices. At the same time, it requires exquisite care, hence the high prices.

The fruit is sometimes confused with jackfruit, as both have large, spiky fruits. Durians have a high demand in many countries, like China and Singapore, and are highly used in Asian cuisines.

Under good care, each tree can produce an average of 150 fruits per year. The current selling price per fruit ranges from Sh 100 to Sh 150. The retail price per kilo of durian is between Ksh 270 and Ksh 690.  This translates to between Sh 15,000 and 22,500 per tree and Sh 900,000 and 1,350,000 per acre. Isn't this a fortune?

Mostly, Kenya imports durian from China, as we are yet to meet the demand locally. On average, a fruit weighs between 700 g and 1.3kg.

However, durian farms are extensive, and the trees need to be regularly pruned and protected from pests and diseases.

Kiwi

Kiwi farming is also gaining popularity among many farmers around the country. It’s a rapidly growing vine plant that produces delicious fruits. The fruit performs well in the temperate regions of Kenya, like the Central Rift Valley, Central Kenya, and Western Highlands. However, it also thrives in coastal areas and most parts of the Nyanza region.

In Kenya, kiwi is one of the most expensive fruits, retailing at Sh 100 to 150 per fruit. With a short maturity period of only two years and an extended lifespan of more than 30 years, Kiwi farming is an agribusiness you should consider.
