So, you have space you want to utilize by growing fruits. Something that takes a short time to bear fruits. But, you have heard people say that the trees take years to mature and sometimes only bear a few fruits. Well, that's not the case. There are fruits you can plant, and expect your first harvest in even nine months. There is always a profitable, fast-maturing tree that you can grow whether you want to scent your yard with fragrant blooms, add interest to your landscape, or establish a commercial orchard. However, you should plant high-quality grafted varieties from certified nurseries to achieve this.

Check out these fruits that mature in less than a year and decide on the one to start with.

Passion Fruits

Most farms are shifting to high-value crops due to unreliable markets of plants such as beans and horticultural products. Passion fruit farming is a lucrative investment that can be a steady source of income. The increasing number of juice makers has fueled the demand for the fruit. Currently, only a small number have ventured into commercial passion farming. So, why not fill the market gap?

Grafted varieties take 7-11 months to mature and bear fruits, from transplanting to the first harvest. The crop begins flowering about 6 months after transplanting. After that, the fruits take 2-3 months to mature and ripen. Yellow passion may mature earlier than purple passion fruit. Oxfarm recommends you plant grafted varieties as they are highly productive and resistant to Fusarium wilt.

Provided the vines are well taken care of and free from pests and diseases, they can last for 3 to 10 years.

What are the ecological conditions for passion fruits?

Passion fruits require moderate and well-distributed rainfall. However, they can be grown under irrigation in drier areas. Besides, they thrive in moderate temperatures and an altitude of 1200 -2000 m above sea level.

They flourish in deep, well-drained, fertile soils with a pH range of 5.5 – 7.0. You should apply manure regularly.

Tree Tomato

If you are looking for a highly productive and profitable plant that matures within a short time, try out tree tomatoes.

Generally, a tree tomato plant takes about 1 to 2 years to mature. It grows to a height of 2 – 5 meters and has a life expectancy of about 12 years. However, grafted Muthakwa tree tomato variety can mature in 8 months and produce 6-10 fruits per cluster. It grows into a single, upright trunk with many lateral branches and has a high output of 100 kg per plant annually.

Ecological requirements

Like other trees, tree tomatoes flourish in deep, well-drained, fertile soils with a pH range of 5 – 8.5. They require moderate rainfall but can be grown under irrigation in drier areas. They do not tolerate drought and strong winds.

Strawberries

Strawberries are one of the simplest fruits to grow, whether you are a beginner or an experienced farmer. You only need to plant them in the right soil, water them well, control pests and diseases, fertilize and train them, and ensure there are ideal growing conditions.

Depending on the variety, strawberries take about 3 months to mature and bear fruits, from the emergence of the leaves to the first harvest time. It takes 4 weeks from flowering to picking fruits. They have a lifespan of about 6 years, although this may vary depending on the management practices and growing conditions. Remove runners from your established plants.

Pepino Melon

Pepino melons are perennial fruits whose demand is increasing rapidly locally and in the export markets. They are fast growers, and it might be challenging to know when the fruits are ripe. You should harvest them at the right time to achieve an optimum flavor. If you pick them too late, they become too soft and rot. If you harvest them too early, they lack the sweetness.

After planting, Pepino melons grow quickly and start bearing fruits within 4 to 6 months. The fruits take 30 – 80 days to mature and ripen after pollination. Pepino melon has a lifespan of about 3 years if proper care is ensured. You should store your melons at room temperature to keep them fresh. They turn mushy and lose flavor quickly if you store them in a fridge.
