When it comes to choosing a popular and profitable crop to invest in, coffee and pomegranate are two prime options that often come to mind. Coffee is mainly due to the narrative of bonuses and how people used to make money from them. However, even if you can make a fortune from both and they are attractive options for investors looking to make a profit, the question remains: which one can make you more money?

Coffee. The King of Crops

Coffee has been one of the most consumed beverages in the world for years, and its demand continues to rise. Visit Java, Dormans, a hotel, or any coffee shop in town. What do you find? Coffee in all its forms: latte, espresso, regular coffee, medium roast, nearly everything.

The International Coffee Organization states that global consumption has been increasing at an average annual rate of 1.3%, indicating a steady market for the commodity. With a diverse range of products such as beans, ground coffee, and instant coffee, the product has a strong and stable market share.

The coffee industry is supported by numerous global organizations and certifications, such as FairTrade, which promotes ethical and sustainable production methods.

In terms of profitability, coffee is a high-value crop with a consistent price range on most occasions. The average market price has been on an upward trend, with a notable increase in the past 5 years.

Pomegranates: The Rising Star

Despite being a newer player in the industry, pomegranates have been gaining momentum as a superfood and a high-value crop. In recent years, the demand for pomegranates and pomegranate-based products has significantly increased, mainly due to their numerous health benefits and unique flavor.

If you visit a place like Carrefour, you will realize that its one of the most expensive fruits. It’s not only the fruits that will earn you money but also its value-added products like juice, jam, and extracts, making it a more potentially profitable investment. Unlike other fruits, pomegranates have a longer shelf life.

Which one can make you more money?

Both crops have their advantages and disadvantages, making them equally promising options for investors.

When it comes to deciding between coffee and pomegranates, the fruit becomes the clear winner. Coffee offers stability and consistency in demand and price, making it a safer investment. On the other hand, pomegranates have a growing demand and the potential for higher profitability due to their versatility.

In May 2023, coffee prices were down by 50% with premium grades AA and AB selling for Sh 30,900 for a 50-kg bag. The retail price range for coffee per kg stands at Ksh 552 to Sh 1150.

Checking on the output per hectare, coffee yields as high as 2300–3400 kg while growing using modern methods and about 500–1000 kg while using traditional methods. However, under good agronomic practices, it’s possible to harvest 2000 to 5000 kg per acre. With a price of Sh 600 per kilo, a farmer can earn roughly Sh 800k. On most occasions, coffee per acre will rake less than this, although this will depend on the number of productive bushes.

What about pomegranates?

Pomegranates are one of the most expensive fruits in the market in Kenya. Healthy trees can yield average of 12 – 15kg per tree during their first year. In the subsequent years, the yield rises to 15 – 20kg. With a spacing of 4m x 4m, an acre can accommodate about 250 trees. This equates to about 2400kg in the first year and 3000kg + in the subsequent years.

Locally, the retail price range is Sh 150 – 300 while wholesale prices are Sh 80 to 100. In export markets, the fruit sells at Sh 1500 to 1700.

This means pomegranate farming can earn a farmer between Sh 1,080,000 to Sh 2,160,000 per year. In export markets, a farmer can pocket way above Sh 3.6m. In subsequent years, a farmer should expect a minimum of Sh 1,350,000 per year. Isn’t this way profitable than coffee?
